I want long hair. Now, what?

How to Pick the Right Hair Extensions.

Here are the 5 things you should think about when buying hair extensions:

1. Length: Where do you want your hair to fall?

I always recommend clients to go no more than 4 inches longer than their natural hair. The best way to see where you want it to lay is to start measuring it  from the middle of the back of your head. This is where your extensions will begin.

-Sandee.

Most hair extensions are available in these lengths:8”, 10”, 12”, 14”, 16”, 18” and 22”.  There are 24” and 26” too, but they are hard to find.

2. Commitment: What type of commitment are you looking for?

Short Term:

Clip-ins (Temporary)

Glue-Ins (1-2 months)

Medium Term:

Micro links/ I-Tips (3+months)

Tape-in (3+months)

Long Term:

Keratin glue (4+months)

Sew-in (4+months)

This is just an approximation on how long you may be able to wear the hair extensions. Different application methods require touch ups/follow ups and specific care. The way you care for them can make a big difference on how long they will last. Also, some medium and long term methods can be used for shorter or longer periods of time with proper care.

SYNTHETIC Vs. HUMAN HAIR

Synthetic Hair($):

Lasts:1-7 days depending on care.

Recommended for short term wear. Made of synthetic fiber, can be heat resistant up to 350° F.

Human Hair ($$$):

Lasts: 3 months+ depending on care.

Recommended for short and medium term wear. Can be styled and dyed (always consult a professional stylist first).

REMI Human Hair ($$$$):

Lasts: 6 months+ depending on care.

Recommended for short, medium and long term wear. Finest quality, cuticles are intact and lined in the same direction.

4. Budget: How much are you willing to spend?

Low Maintenance

Clip-ins ($$):

Weaving hair usually cut up into 9 pieces with clips sewn onto the weft.

Glue-Ins ($$):

Bonds hair and extension using a special glue that can be used on the scalp.

Micro links ($$$$):

Gently attaches to natural hair via small metal beads wrapped with silicon inside to protect the hair from breakage.

High Maintenance

Keratin glue ($$$$)

Can be extremely strong used to bond hair and extension usually used for individual strands of hair.

Tape-in ($$$)

Thin tape weft, 1 inch wide per-tape hair weft that get “taped-in” between your own hair in sandwich like bond.

Sew-in ($$$$)

Hair extension that’s sewn onto tight braid on the scalp

4. Hair type: What texture matches your hair?

Find the right hair texture for a seamless and natural look. There are a few different textures in hair extensions:

Fine/Silky – Smooth, sleek and shiny feel mostly found in 100% REMI hair.

Curly/Wavy – Curls can vary in tight curls, medium curls, and loose wave

Yaki –  Coarse, thicker hair.

5. Color: What matches your hair color best?

Let's be honest, it can be very rare to find an exact match. But even so, you can always find something really close to your hair color. Most hair extensions are available in natural colors (1, 1b, 2, 4, 6...), blondes (27, 22, 24, 613, Pb…) ,reds (30, 33, 99G, BG…) and blends. Fantasy colors are mostly available in Synthetic Fibers but you can also find some brands that have them in human hair.  For more information about color you can always read our Hair Color Guide:
